As human beings, we innately realize the importance of giving back to society, because it fulfills our deepest human needs. Growth is one of those needs. Volunteering also fulfills our needs for contribution and significance, making us feel needed, unique and helpful.”

~Tony Robbins

As massage therapists, we experience the value of giving back to others by helping them out of yesterday’s pain and into tomorrow’s joy.  There is something powerful about helping someone without receiving something in return. Below are the top 6 reasons to work for a company that gives back to their local community.

1 – Gives You a Sense of Purpose

Living in a routine that you feel stuck in every day is one of the biggest reasons many people feel unfulfilled. Giving back to the community, however, offers you the opportunity to make a noticeable impact in the area you live. Waking up knowing you are doing something meaningful gives you a greater sense of purpose while positively changing the people who have touched your heart.

2 – Meet Others

Volunteering is a great outlet for meeting others with the same interests. You can create lasting friendships with those you may not have otherwise met in your day-to-day life.

3 – Strengthen communities

A community is much more than a group of people living together. A deeper sense of community is cultivated by working together to improve the areas where you work, live and play. A strong community with a high quality of life means fighting together for a safer, more peaceful, healthier life for you and those around you.

4 - Improve Your Health

Yes! Volunteering is actually good for your health. Studies have shown that those who spend more time volunteering develop a greater sense of purpose in life. They are more motivated to live healthier lifestyles in order to achieve their goals. Volunteering is also linked to better stress management and prevention of chronic health diseases.

5 – Gain New Perspectives

A lot of us live pretty comfortably. We have families that support us, a roof over our heads and constant access to our basic needs.  When we volunteer, our eyes are opened to people who may not have all of our conveniences. We realize we have something more to give. Suddenly, the worry of what to wear tomorrow is not that big of a deal.

6 – Boosts Your Self-Esteem

In a world that went mostly digital for over a year, many of us are trying to figure out how to interact with the world again. Giving back to the community shifts the focus off of ourselves and onto others who need help.  Doing something good for others helps us develop a better sense of self and how we fit into the world around us. We begin to discover that life isn’t about gaining the approval of others as much as it is about doing something meaningful for others. There is nothing more confidence boosting than this. Plus, it makes you feel good!
