Have you heard any of these rumors about Burke Williams? 

• You need two years of experience before you can apply. 
• In the spa, massages aren't therapeutic, targeted or rehabilitative. 
• All massage therapists learn a sequence that they do for each guest.

Quickly after getting hired with Burke Williams, (right after I received my certification!) I learned these were all myths. Thanks to social media and past employees sharing how things WERE, rumors have spread across the massage community. I’m here to set the record straight and dispel any myths I’ve read online or heard in the community so you can learn the TRUTH behind working at Burke Williams.

MYTH #1: You need two years of experience before you can apply with Burke Williams.

TRUTH: Any certified massage therapist can apply at Burke Williams. Those who demonstrate a high level of passion to help others, therapeutic knowledge, touch, and elevated communication skills may be welcomed to join our team. We have an externship program to support local students in gaining these skills while they are in school to help prepare them if they want to apply once they are certified. Burke Williams hires qualified massage therapists, based on their demonstrated skill sets, not their length of practice.

MYTH #2: Burke Williams' massage therapists don’t get to do any therapeutic work or deep tissue. 

TRUTH: While Burke Williams offers many services that promote relaxation, there are also several offerings to give guests therapeutic benefits: 

• Deep Tissue Massage is a customized massage that is a highly requested service. It works to release chronic tension and pain and restore range of motion and movement in specific focus areas with the use of varying degrees of pressure and techniques that are not used in a relaxation massage.  
• Craniosacral Therapy is a gentle healing modality performed while fully clothed and includes extremely gentle holds along the body to release tension and dysfunction in order to improve whole-body health and performance.
• Lymphatic Massage reduces swelling and supports immune system function by using a very light touch to gently manipulate key areas to encourage the movement of lymph fluids around the body. 

MYTH #3: All massage therapists perform the same massage sequence so guests will experience the same service no matter which massage therapist they go to.

TRUTH: Burke Williams’ massage therapists are known for giving their guests personalized massage experiences that address the needs given in their intake. Massage therapists are encouraged to be creative and use their intuition when working with guests. We want their therapists to stand out by giving their own innovative touch to each service.

Burke Williams offers a “Burke Williams” enhancement; not to be confused with a sequenced massage. This enhancement is a multi-layered sensory experience combining our unique blend of essential oils, weighted heat packs, and medicinal Chinese herbs to relax and balance your body and mind. 

MYTH #4: All massage therapists go through a four week training before they start working with guests.

TRUTH: Many years ago Burke Williams put their massage therapists through a four week training. Over the years the massage development team created a customized training to meet the needs of the therapists coming on board. 

Currently we offer two training options:

• For seasoned therapists with spa experience we offer a 3-5 day training in the spa. During this time they learn about our culture, our massage standards and the many nuances we apply to create a transformational experience for each guest.
• For the massage therapists who are hired with little to no spa experience, we offer a 2-week paid extended training program followed by the 3-5 day training in the spa to help the therapist build confidence and learn the elevated communication and massage skills needed to succeed in a luxury spa. 

MYTH #5: Burke Williams has an Academy and offers training so I don’t have to be a certified massage therapist to apply.

TRUTH: The Burke Williams Academy closed down in 2017. Since then, Burke Williams supports new massage therapists in the industry by offering a Tuition Reimbursement Program for anyone with a qualifying student loan that gets hired after they become certified. This Tuition Reimbursement Program offers up to $200 per month in tuition reimbursement without a duration contract!

Once employed, Burke Williams offers training for their Certified Massage Therapists. Trainings such as Shiatsu, Boundaries, Advanced Deep Tissue techniques and several others, are a sampling of what is taught to help build the skills and confidence to be successful massage therapists.
