Facials are more than a skin treatment; they’re a beauty ritual. They can be a soothing, solitary escape or an excuse to gather with friends and indulge in a night of pampering. However, pricey creams can quickly sabotage the physical and spiritual benefits of a facial. When cruising the beauty aisle avoid the temptation to purchase an expensive kit and consider trying one of these DIY options. Many of the ingredients can be found in your kitchen, making them convenient, affordable and a perfect element for beauty rituals.
*Remember to wash your hands and face before applying masks and take extra care around the eyes.
Egg-Based Facials
The incredible, edible egg is more than a healthy breakfast option; it’s an excellent base ingredient for DIY facials. Eggs are high in vitamin A and packed with proteins, both of which aid in elasticity and help reduce fine lines. Eggs are also high in collagen and help your skin maintain a healthy glow while minimizing pores.
Lemon-Honey Egg Facial
1 egg white
1 teaspoon fresh lemon juice
½ teaspoon honey
This is a simple, popular recipe that will help moisturize and rejuvenate your skin. Combine the egg white and lemon juice with a whisk until frothy. Stir in the honey. Gently apply to the face. After the mixture dries, wash away with gentle soap and water.
Simple Egg and Olive Oil Facial
1 egg yolk
1 tablespoon olive oil
This combination is excellent for dry skin since it helps hydrate and smooth. Mix the ingredients with a fork and apply to the face with a warm, damp towel. After applying, rinse the towel in hot water and wring it out. Rest the warm towel over your face for roughly two minutes (be sure the towel isn’t causing discomfort). Remove the towel and rinse the mixture away.
Yogurt-Based Facials
Yogurt is a great agent for skin care. It gently, but efficiently, exfoliates dead cells from the skin. The alpha hydroxy acid found in yogurt not only dissolves dead skin cells, it aids with wrinkle reduction by removing additional toxins. It’s also an option for sunburns (consult with a dermatologist before applying to sunburned skin). Be sure to use plain, firm unflavored yogurt for the following recipes.
Honey-Yogurt Facial
1 tablespoon yogurt
1 teaspoon honey
1 teaspoon oats
Pairing honey with yogurt results in a highly effective moisturizer and the oats work as a natural exfoliant. Gently mix all of the ingredients together in a bowl. Apply the mixture onto your face and let it rest for ten minutes. Rinse your face with warm water and pat dry.
Banana-Yogurt Facial
¼ of one banana
½ tablespoon yogurt
¼ teaspoon fresh lemon juice
Bananas are nutritious, delicious and they’re as good for your skin as they are for your health. Mixing banana with yogurt creates a mask that fights free radicals and staves off wrinkles. Thoroughly mash the banana in a bowl then gently mix in the yogurt and lemon juice. Apply to the face for ten minutes then wash away with a gentle cleanser.
Mayonnaise-Based Facials
Considering mayonnaise is made from eggs, it has all of the benefits that egg-based facials have as well as extra benefits including softening qualities and anti-inflammatory traits. They are also among the simplest DIY facial bases and can be paired with another ingredient or used alone.
Avocado-Mayo Facial
½ tablespoon mayonnaise
¼ avocado
Avocados are ripe with benefits, help fight acne and smooth the skin. For a quick facial, thoroughly mash the avocado then mix it with the mayonnaise. Apply to the skin for 5 – 10 minutes and then rinse clean with an all-natural soap.
Carrot-Mayo-Salt Facial
¼ teaspoon Epsom salt
½ teaspoon finely grated carrot
1 tablespoon mayonnaise
This is a trio that will leave your skin soft and exfoliated. Carrots are rich in antioxidants and aid in cell renewal. The mayo moisturizes and the salt helps clear away toxins. Combine all of the ingredients and apply to the skin for five minutes. Wash away with an all-natural soap.
