We’re always on the lookout for trending services that our clients might enjoy, but sometimes we come across procedures that leave us scratching our heads. The following three spa treatments made top head-scratchers:
1. Snake massage - Offered in Israel, Russia and Thailand, this massage is exactly what it sounds like - a body rub from snakes. First you disrobe to minimal clothing, and then giant snakes (usually pythons) are lain across your body. They then slither back and forth across your bare skin, which is supposed to be relaxing - really.
Not into serpents on your naked flesh? Understandable. Try a massage from human hands like the Swedish/Shitasu fusion treatment at Burke Williams Spa.
2. Snail slime moisturizer - As snails move, they leave a trail of mucus in their wake - snail slime, or helix aspersa muller glycoconjugates in science speak. Some have claimed that this sticky insect mucus is good for skin, and some spas in places like Korea go further than just putting slime in their face creams. They actually set living snails to crawl across peoples’ faces.
Does the thought of a live bug facial turn you off? There are other ways to nourish your skin, like an insect-free facial from Burke William spa.
3. Beer bath - Offered mainly in Europe, beer baths feature deep tubs of porter, lager, IPA or brown ales, taking the brew out of the pubs and into the spas. The sudsy soaks are touted for relaxation and attracting male clientele. We’ve not yet found confirmed reports of patrons becoming tipsy from alcohol absorption through the skin.
People do strange things in pursuit of one goal: to slow the aging process. Luckily, one of the more time-tested ways to combat aging doesn’t involve reptiles, insects or fermented grain and can be done from home: exercise. Check out our blog How Exercise Tells Your Cells to Slow the Aging Process.
