The Gift of Silence

Posted by support on Aug 26, 2013

Silence is a gift we often take advantage of without even knowing it. The other day, I found myself at home, sans family, the music that usually weaves in and out of the rooms in our house were muted, no buzz from the washer and dryer and all of the televisions were off. I found myself confused for a second; I felt time. I was enjoying the silence.

I realized it is not the sound or noise that can distract me and toss me into a tornado of confusion, it's the energy. The silence was the greatest form of meditation and the stillness of the experience brought peace to a whole new level for me.

How do you meditate or enjoy the silence? In everyday life it becomes increasingly more difficult to clear your mind. Energy is everywhere. It’s vibration. Whether it be created by a person, machine or simply a car passing by your window. So I've come up with a few ways to practice "meditation on the fly" to give my brain a break. Yes, that's right. With a schedule and family like mine, without setting aside a few minutes to regroup, I would lose my wits.

- The moment you wake up, count your blessings. Even before I open my eyes, I tell myself how grateful I am for the five most important things in my life. The more specific, the better.

- Before I fall asleep I think of five people who could use some good thoughts. A little more love than usual. And I hope tomorrow is brighter for them.Yoga and Relax

- Each morning while brushing my teeth, I look at myself in the mirror and give myself a smile and a compliment. This might not sound like meditation, but it instantly relieves any stress or tension with a positive affirmation.

- Music. Two words: Rockabye Baby! These lullaby renditions of modern bands are the out of this world for relaxing. Press play on one of their many artists, close your eyes and just sort things out. I promise the older you are, the more you will enjoy these compilations. You can find them on iTunes or Spotify.

- Escape. Take the time to make yourself a priority and relax. This may be a walk around your favorite trail by yourself, a day at the spa or enjoying a good book that is acquiring dust as you’re reading this at your favorite coffee shop. Do what you’ve been meaning to make the time to experience.

I wish I could practice yoga everyday and “check out” to get myself back to Zen, but I figured out a way that works for me. Not a day goes by when I don't break out the prayer beads and recite wishful thoughts in my head.

It's all about being grateful. How do you keep yourself in balance?
